Can I fire Subsonic .22 ammo in a handgun made for .22lr?

The gun is a Walther P-22...the cases of the ammo are the same size, but the bullet length is just a little different. Please don't mention .22 Long, short, magnum, ect. because I just need to know about the Subsonic or Aguila Colibri.

I also have some .22 RIM, and .22lr rat shot that I'm wondering about using in my handgun...not sure it's alright when it's not a rifle.

I figure it will work because I do fire .223 out of my AR-15 that is made for the 5.56 and it works just fine.|||I fire subsonic .22LR ammo in a Ruger Mark 3 and a P-22 all the time and have never had any trouble.|||I've never tried the subsonics in my P22 or the Colibri, but i know that the colibri will not cycle the action of the P22. you will have to cycle it by hand. I've shot the CCI shot shells which I think are the same as the rat shot. it also does not cycle the action. The only ammo that works flawlessly in my P22 is Remington gold bullets.|||I've used Remington SubSonic .22LR ammunition in my Marlin Model 60 rifle. It functions properly in my rifle.

You're welcome to try using subsonic ammunition in your Walther P-22. The only way to find out if it will function properly in your handgun is to try it for yourself. It may work well, it may not. It's an experiment.|||IDK about the Walther specifically but if the action is recoil operated, which most semi-auto pistols are ( as opposed to gas operated ), it will probably not generate enough recoil to cycle the action. And what would be the sense in a semi-auto pistol that wasn't semi-auto?|||yes but it will not cycle your action and make sure when you shoot it, your barrel is dry, otherwise the casing is kind of hard to get out, i do not know about .22 RIM, and rat shot should be close up and personal and will not work to far away|||Yes you can but you will have to pull back the slide after every round to eject the case and chamber a new round, the sub sonic ammo doesn't have enough recoil to do that.|||That gun only works with high velocity ammo.

Honestly my Bersa 22 (walther ppk/s clone) can fire CCI standard velocity which is in fact subsonic. I suggest you try any ammo but your better off with high/hyper velocity.|||yes but you will have to operate the slide by hand. i only shoot subsonic .22lr ammo from my bolt action rifles.|||Lower power loads may fail to operate the slide properly.|||yes you can, depending on the ammo it may more may not cycle the action though.

Remington Subsonic is a subsonic round that still manages to cycle most semiautomatics such as the Ruger 10/22 %26amp; Marlin 60 rifles, and my Phoenix HP22 pistol.

all the other subsonic rounds I shoot does not cycle the action, you'll have to cycle it manually.

.22 ratshot is useless out of a rifle, it'll be more useless out of a pistol. the cartridge is the same dimensions and spec as a .22LR round. except it will not cycle the action.

it doesn't really make sense to shoot subsonics out of a pistol anyway, the short barrel still results in a loud bang, considerably louder than if I was to shoot the same round out of a bolt action rifle.
